Here is what I am noticing. I see all kind of claims of resources but....here we are on day 6 and already people are fading away.
The initial enthusiasm for the project is gone and the responses to this are getting less and less.
No wonder some of you don't get anything done.
So here is a problem for you to solve.
What resources do you have that can be applied to FNISHING this project?
The other side of it is this. What are you actively doing to AVOID finishing the project?
Have fun
Tom

Hey dude,
Because this is not a real time thing it takes too much time for people to respond and things to get going. How about moving fast and anyone who wants to get things done might follow?

I ask what project???? Not having stated a goal won't help to feel motivated. We were about to define the goal, wouldn't that the thing that motivated this exercise?, I'm sure that once one is defined then people would feel motivated to it,
I also think that thanksgiving holiday slowed most people. So let's give them the chance to catch up and bring us the questions... would that be ... what is your goal???

Thanksgiving followed by 2 11-hour workdays and 1 day of doing absolutely nothing equals a break in the pattern. I'm back now, so let's keep this going. Just make sure you keep posting the assignments daily.

I'm continuing because I'm curious to see what I get out of this. I think I will get something beneficial because it is leading to exploration of an area I need work in. Its paid off already in recognizing the "getting a wii system" as a resource. I'm not avoiding anything, yet . So, I'm can't answer that question. I can say that when I avoid on other projects that I distract myself with whatever is handy and tell myself the projects not important.

Not me I've been super busy getting things done the last few days.

Resources I have that are being applied to current projects:
1) Clearly defining an outcome and an end point (i.e.: when)
2) Scheduling the deadlines in a calendar.
3) Outsourcing any work I don't need to do myself (or that can be done better / faster / cheaper by someone else). This frees up my time and accelerates the progress being made.
4) Involving others in the goals to help me stay accountable and on time. They can also bring their own resources in + encouragement, mentorship and support.
5) Strangely - getting more sleep is proving to be a valuable resource. This has been a big problem for me recently - working far too late and not getting enough sleep makes me less effective.
6) Continually asking myself "What do I want to achieve?" and then comparing that to what I'm actually doing. Good way to break unhelpful behaviors or bring attention to them. Then fix by changing strategy or using 3D mind etc.
What am I actively doing to AVOID finishing the project?
1) Allowing myself to get distracted by something mindless (TV, Internet) when I hit a minor "bump" on the road to achieving the goal. Mindless == avoiding feeling the bad feelings instead of dealing with them.
2) Setting unrealistic expectations. i.e.: On challenging goals it can be tempting to think "this is going to be SOOOOO easy" and then any little bump on the road to achievement can make us feel bad and throw us off track for a while (sometimes permanently).
So it's a good idea to evaluate things that may get in the way and have a strategy or two in place to deal with them.
That will do for the moment.

OK, I am in catch-up mode here ... I see that there are other threads that have appeared since my last look and some of my answers may echo the thoughts of others. But here goes anyway ...

Both probably true. The flip (but true ! answer is "the important ones are here, that's all that matters !". In addition, as others have said, you “yanks” had a big holiday in the middle of that period. I know a lot of folks travel long distances at that time and that can be disruptive. Likewise, those elsewhere in the world probably lose touch because there aren't regular posts.
Suggestion: Tom, although we are “indoors” on the web site, it might be worth the occasional post to the list to say “Hey guys, there's another task on the web site”. Just a thought ...
Harun is right about it not being real-time, plus we are spread over the globe: for example, Phill is in NZ (right ?) and has a 12 hour time difference with us in the UK. Depending on how soon I can get to the PC and how much time I can spend here, it could be at least 24 hours before I catch one of his posts. It's maybe not quite so bad for the US posts, but this “time dilation” can be a factor too.
And Tom, don't take this the wrong way but rvicuna is right in saying “what project” ? I mean, as you say, “it's day 6” of 14 and you are still playing things so close to your chest that I'm not quite sure where I'm going with you ! I mean, the list-making stuff has been really useful and you know that I trust you and all, but ... where are we going ?
OK, lemme answer your specific questions ...
Quote:
“What resources do you have that can be applied to FNISHING this project?”:
* My motivation - to achieve what should be a clearly defined outcome that is going to be something beneficial that I truly want for myself.
* A time frame.
* Commitment - this might be represented by sharing my objective with others (e.g. family).
* Organisation – making time to do what needs to be done !
* Tracking - where I am, whether I am on or off-course.
* Reacting – i.e. correcting course if needs be.
* Ability to defer gratification.
Again, Tom said:

“What are you actively doing to AVOID finishing the project?”
Well, the reverse or absence of the things listed above. In addition:
* For me, I often avoid doing things because they are relatively simple and/or won't take long – so I go “I can do this at any time” and leave it. This can mean that I have a whole load of “easy little things” that “don't take long”, but there are so many of them that to do them ALL does take up a whole lot of time, all at once, a large slice of time that you may not be able to allocate within the deadline. And of course, some prove not to be easy and I may misjudge some and find that they will take much longer than I originally thought.
* I guess that both of the above are procrastination strategies. There are others: “I can't do it now because ... xyz (fill in the blank) e.g the “this is so important that I must get it done now !” strategy.
* It's close ally, the “this is so much fun/fascinating that I will just spend 5 more minutes on it ... honestly !” strategy.
* I probably genuinely have too many “projects” on the go at once. Again, maybe this is just a procrastination thing.
* Discouragement when things don't go as planned or as easily as planned.
* Negative self-talk.
There may be more, but the big one I am getting there is our old friend procrastination.
Hope that answers the questions.
Roger
