Are you aiming for the bottom of the barrel?

Time after time I hear from people who seem to want to only put in the
minimum amount of effort in order to get their outcome.

Let's face it folks. If you want to have the life that you desire you are
going to have to work for it. Over the years Kim and I have worked very hard
to develop a set of tools to make other people's lives easier. That doesn't
mean we worked to make their lives EASY.

There are three things that you need to have if you want to have success in
any area of your life. They are focus, dedication and commitment.

Early on in our career we had a core set of Essential Skills that would take
people's communication and influence to a new level. What we found is that
even though people love the seminars and love the skills, there were
personal beliefs and behaviors that seemed to get in the way of them
actually using those skills.

Recently on one of our mailing lists there was a discussion about goals.
One guy has a goal he wants to make a certain amount of money but he wants
to do it with the LEAST amount of effort. He is aiming for the bottom of
the barrel.

What I mean by that is that he has figured out the minimum he needs to move
on and then wants to said that as his goal. Then he only wants to put in
the minimum amount of effort to actually achieve that goal.

Let's face it. Minimum effort only yields minimum results.

One of the things that I have noticed is that some people aim for the bottom
of the barrel because that is a safe place to aim. They are afraid if they
put in too much effort and don't succeed that they will be disappointed or
look stupid . So instead of getting their hopes up they do what is safe.

They put in the minimum amount of effort and get a very predictable result.

We just had an anchoring boot camp in Atlanta last week. The people there
absolutely loved it but..I wonder how many of them are using any of the
skills today.

Folks, we could give you the best tools in the world but it means nothing if
you never take them out of the box. Having a hammer doesn't build anything.

For those of you who are aiming for the bottom of the barrel I have a
suggestion. Allow yourself to suspend reality for just a moment. With the
biggest problem in your life was not the biggest problem in your life?

What I mean by that is, what if you didn't have as an excuse any more? What
if shyness wasn't an excuse. What if being overweight wasn't an excuse?
What if being too young was not an excuse? What if being too old was not an
excuse? What if not being attractive enough was not an excuse? What if not
being smart enough was not an excuse?

What if you took your favorite excuse for sitting on your ass and pretended
that it was not there?

My experience is this. There are two distinct categories of
people............

Tom, Doesnt hard work violate the lazy rule?

You said, "We just had an anchoring boot camp in Atlanta last week. The people there absolutely loved it but..I wonder how many of them are using any of the skills today."

One thing that kept coming up in the bootcamp is the excuse they would get caught using the skills. Well, if someone is afraid of getting caught, they think theyre doing something bad. If they think theyre doing something bad, they just wont do it because it violates their morals.

Imagine holding a stealing or pick pocket bootcamp. You could give everyone the information and show them how to do it. No matter how bad a person really wants to use the skills, they wont do it if they think its a bad thing.

I want to use this stuff, I really do. I want to go get jobs I'm qualified (and not qualified) for and seduce the women I want. But here I am sitting on my ass because I feel persasion and manipulation is sort of a bad thing.

If you hold a bootcamp and not every single person is using the skills, then you've failed as a teacher.
